STAFF HANDBOOK

Fourth edition  ·  September 1995

Issued by site oversight

This handbook is issued under the order establishing the Site. The order is held by the registry and may be read on request.

Keep this handbook. It replaces all previous editions. It does not leave the Site.

i

1. Your badge

1.1  Wear your badge where it can be seen, on every level, at all times.

1.2  A badge is issued once, in person, at the badge office in the surface administration block. At issue you will be recorded reading the personnel card (appendix A).

1.3  The recording is kept with your record for as long as you are employed, and for thirty years afterwards.

1.4  A lost badge is reported to the duty office at once. Do not borrow a badge. Do not lend yours.

2. Keys and locks

2.1  Every site door, cupboard and cabinet opens with the site key.

2.2  Staff may not fit their own padlocks to site fittings. A lock that the site key does not open should be reported to the duty office.

3. The surface administration block

3.1  The main corridor of the surface block is known as the warm corridor. It is the only heated corridor on the Site.

3.2  At shift change (14.15 and 22.15) it is crowded. Keep the double doors to the yard clear. Shift change is by the clock above those doors.

3.3  The canteen, the pay office, the switchboard, the typing pool and the badge office open off the warm corridor. The stair to the lower levels is at the far end from the doors.

4

4. The lower levels

4.1  Below the surface block you will hear the ventilation plant. It runs continuously.

4.2  If the ventilation stops, or its sound changes, ring the duty office on level one at once (3000). Do not wait to see whether it comes back.

4.3  Sub-level Two and below are entered by duty roster only.

4.4  Cell Four is entered by the acoustics office and by site oversight. There are no exceptions to this paragraph.

5. Fire, and the klaxon

5.1  The evacuation klaxon is very loud. It is designed to be heard on every level at once.

5.2  Tests are announced on the noticeboard in the warm corridor. An unannounced klaxon is not a test.

5.3  The assembly point is the yard. The fire order on the noticeboard gives the occupancy figures used by the fire service. Do not alter them.

6. Works and cable

6.1  No work is done on the Site without a works order. Works orders are signed on the Site. Requisitions are approved by site oversight.

6.2  Contractors route cable round occupied plant rooms, never through them. It adds about four metres. It is always done.

5

7. Pay

7.1  Pay is made at the grille in the pay office on Fridays.

7.2  Pay is made to the person. It will not be handed to a colleague, a relative or a friend on your behalf.

7.3  If you cannot attend, your pay will be held until you can.

8. Recording and photography

8.1  Private cameras and recording devices are not permitted on the Site.

8.2  The acoustics office records rooms for measurement. These recordings are of the room, and not of you.

9. Talking about work

9.1  Do not discuss the lower levels in the surface block. It is warm and it is crowded, and it carries.

Appendix A. The personnel card

At the issue or renewal of a badge, the holder reads the card below once, into the badge office recorder, at an ordinary pace and in an ordinary speaking voice. Do not correct yourself. If you make a mistake, carry on.

Personnel recording  ·  Card P/1

The quick brown fox jumps over the lazy dog. She sells sea shells by the shore, and the shore is very quiet today. I would rather walk the long way round than explain myself twice. Numbers like seventeen, forty and a hundred and three all sound different.

Read once. Then say your name, and stop.

The recordings are held by the badge office, on the shelf behind the counter, in badge number order.
