Welcome
Dr Aline Marsh joined the acoustics office on Tuesday 13 February. Dr Marsh comes to us after twelve years spent measuring hospital wards, lecture theatres, two cathedrals and, she says, one very unhappy library.
She tells us that no room is ever truly silent. Every room has what she calls a floor: the sound it makes when nothing is happening in it. She says ours are the best floors she has ever worked on, and that we should take this as a compliment.
If you see Dr Marsh on your level with a meter, please carry on as normal. That is the whole idea. (Ask her about the library.)
The roll
With February’s arrivals the roll stands at two hundred and thirteen, the most it has ever been.
Miss Pryor asks us to remind everyone that pay is made at the grille, on Fridays, to the person. She will not give your pay to a friend, a colleague or a husband, and she has asked us to underline husband.
From the duty office
Corporal Alun Vickery has now done six years of nights in the duty office on level one without missing a shift. Asked for his secret, he said: “Nobody’s ever asked me.”
He would like whoever borrowed the duty office kettle to bring it back.

The ventilation
New staff sometimes ask about the hum. The ventilation plant on the lower levels runs continuously, day and night, and you will stop hearing it after your first week.
If it ever stops, ring the duty office. Cpl Vickery would like to know.
Canteen
Maureen Tully (counter) and Hazel Brind (kitchen) ask for cups to come back to the counter, please.
Tuesday is shepherd’s pie. Friday is fish. Tuesday has always been shepherd’s pie and it is not going to change, so please stop asking Hazel.
Maintenance
Graham Petch reports that the clock above the double doors in the warm corridor is running two minutes fast. It will be serviced this month. Until then it is the clock the Site goes by, so shift change is when it says it is.
Social club
Darts: Duty office 3, Maintenance 2. Cpl Vickery threw the only one hundred and eighty of the season and has asked for it to be recorded here. It is recorded here.
Quiz night: Friday 12 April, in the mess, teams of four. Names to Janice Farrar in the pay office.
The coach trip to on Saturday 16 March is full. There is a waiting list.

A word from site oversight
I am asked about once a year what site oversight is for. It is for seeing that the Site does what it was built to do. That is a short answer, and it is the whole of it.
I would add one thing. Everything on this Site is written down, and most of it is signed. Please read what you sign. Nobody does, and I have never understood why not.

Staff notices
- Badge renewals fall due in April. Bring your old badge to the badge office. You will be asked to read the card again.
- The typing pool cannot type from pencil. (S. Leckie)
- The registry closes at 16.00. Dockets do not leave the cage. (C. Aspinall)
- Parcels for the lower levels leave the surface block at 10.00 and 15.00. (D. Oyston, porters)
- Records will close for stocktaking on the last Friday of the month. (P. Wray)
